Marius Grootveld

OAFs program committee is proud to announce this event — especially after hearing rumours about an intriguing and progressive lecture at Bergen Arkitektforening earlier this fall. The capital’s association couldn’t risk being any less up to date.
The lecture is organized in collaboration with the master course Transformation in Practice, led by Amandine Kastler and Erlend Skjeseth.
Through his work and research, Marius Grootveld explores an exceptionally interesting approach to artificial intelligence as a tool for architects — one that helps us see, assess, and understand context and existing built environments. His projects show that AI can serve as a powerful instrument for architectural inquiry, rather than simply a means of automating or replacing the architect’s role.
Marius is one of the founders of VELDWERK, established in 2016 together with Jantje Engels. The name Veldwerk — literally “fieldwork” — emphasizes the office’s focus on site and context. For them, a building is never an isolated object, but something in dialogue with its surroundings.
Since 2016, Marius has been a lecturer at RWTH Aachen, at the Lehrstuhl für Gebäudelehre, and he has also taught at TU Delft and the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam since 2014. He is frequently invited to lectures, workshops, and juries in Belgium and abroad.
